Yes; I was thinking "There's another half-hour at least: there must be another twist in store" - the remainder was superb drama, quite exceptional in UK police stories.

the brief meeting with the two mums, the disbelief: "you knew nothing?"
.. echoing the exact words Miller had used in her parting shot at the Pauline Quirk character: "You had that man in your house and you knew nothing?!"

    Well done ITV

Not without flaws (so the quarrel with the postman was just a quarrel that he denied having? Or never happened? - but then why did Jack make the allegation? - And why burn the boat, rather than just sinking it? - And the "psychic" actually was psychic???!) but a gripping story, superbly acted throughout. Monday nights are going to be very different - especially as Broadchurch is being replaced by the MacKellan & Jacobi Sitcom!

"Whicher" itself being a sequel / spin-off of the dramatisation of Kate Summerscale's book.

EDIT: just seen the DTel article makes that point too...

Of which I have heard some good things - they're so confident that it's a hit that they've already filmed the Christmas Special - the series is called Vicious

I am tempted to agree but who knows? Mr O'Donovan seems to think that the later Killing was a dud which I didn't find to be true

There's nothing so desperate than a television company seeking to build on an initial success ... unless it's a TV pundit seeking to make a name for himself

Hmmmm.... Sounds huge fun in theory... But the trailers I've seen seemed to be characterised by slightly desperate - that word again - hamming and over-doing to make up for a dodgy script.

                I hope I'm wrong.

                I'm certainly off-topic

Wait'll you see Series Two, when Brian Blessed moves in as a neighbour!

I share Cali's concerns about the trailers; they do seem to be making rather an effort! I hope they settle into their parts and it lives up to such a dream pairing.

Not to mention Frances de la Tour who's already in it - great actress but doesn't do understated! I saw her OTT Hermia in the Peter Brook Midsummer Night's Dream in the late 60's.

A lot of these great thesps are just too big for the small screen.

....how very true....This new sit-com looks like an old-style episode of Coronation Street....looks very cheap and cardboard....harsh lighting....acted frontwise as if for stage....yep comic acting is an art in itself and I fear IMc & DJ don't have it, nor will they ever have....(and with you I take this from the trailers, unfortunately expecting the full product to be worse still)....

....OoooooooH 8th O you skeptical cynical curr....

you obviously all know how to spot a winner

ITV is awarded Channel of the Year at this year's Edinburgh television festival, and is recognised for the success of its crime thriller Broadchurch.

As regards Channel 4 drama - did anyone watch Southcliffe? I thought it was very good but let down by the last episode. (edit: but I thought The Mill was rubbish, I gave up on it)

So did I: a string of clichés and plot devices that required not so much that "belief" should be "suspended" as "hung, drawn and quartered". Considering the series was supposedly based on "actual historical documents", what they produced from these was disgraceful.
