Curious that Michael Berkeley said that the symphony was subtitled "A Soviet artist's reply to just criticism" when, according to what I was told, this was not on the score so it can hardly have been a subtitle. (Perhaps someone can correct me if I was misinformed.)
The story behind the alleged "subtitle" that I heard was that a journalist asked Shostakovich if the symphony was "a Soviet artist's reply to just criticism". In Stalin's Russia there was only one answer to that question.
