Elspet Gray has died aged 83.

Elspet Gray, who appeared in many of the Whitehall farces beloved of late 1950s/1960s Britain, especially those starring her husband Brian Rix, has died.

It was usually her role to play the still point in the rapidly turning world as the plot span out of control, doors opening & closing, and trousers falling down.

I enjoyed them from when I was a child and they were shown on BBC TV, and I remember her fondly.

Actress and charity campaigner Elspet Gray, who appeared in TV shows Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Doctor Who, has died aged 83.

Good heavens! Only yesterday I was looking at some Catweazle clips and wondered about her: she was "Owlface's" mother in series two - exactly as you say, keeping her cool whilst chaos exploded around her.
