    Headlong

Saturday Drama on R4 was a radio version of Michael Frayn's novel.

A struggle to lay hands on a long-lost materspiece. Adapted from Michael Frayn's novel.

Apart from being a satire on the world of Fine Art, it was a most amusing hour and a half's listening. A bit of a romp perhaps, but none the worse for that.

A résumé of the plot here. I don't think it had penetrated my consciousness that the reason for all the current BBC Fraynmania is that it is his 80th birthday this year.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Read the book years ago - as I recall it wasn't such a frenetic pace & the characters had slightly more subtlety and were therefore slightly more believable.

Interesting. Is that what someone else's radio adaptation has done to the novel, I wonder?

I wasn't greatly impressed by the novel, so I didn't bother to listen to this adaptation. I've still got to catch up with the Dürrenmatt play that was on Do3 yesterday.
