She wrote the article that Calum linked to and I quote Surely it’s the latter, for by any measure Borgen is very poor indeed: badly written, sentimental, clichéd and above all absolutely devoid of any sense of drama.

She is watching a different Borgen than the one that's kept me hooked for the last few weeks. I avoided series 1 because the thought of a subtitled drama about Danish coalition politics sounded as dull as ditchwater. I could not have been more mistaken, and I think that the New Statesman writer is totally wrong in her view of the programmme. Or she's just being contrary for the sake of it, which is quite likely.

Yes ... I meant that you said she made "a good point" in that longish piece, and I merely wondered which of her points you meant.

But it's the overall point that Borgen is

Borgen may not be up to the standard of The Killing as regards plot, but it's one of the best dramas currently being offered on UK television at the moment. And, yes, perhaps we have been seduced by the erotic sound of the Scandinavian language and the thrill of subtitles ....

I was beginning to swing towards the contrarian view - yet another soap - until episodes 7 and 8. The quality level seemed, to me, to rise considerably. It'll be interesting to see how the second series ends.

Well I thought it ended superbly- those last two episodes had me gripped from beginning to end, both on the political and personal levels. I won't say anymore lest I give away spoilers to anyone who has not yet watched it, but- roll on series 3!! This has been right up there with my top TV series- Game of Thrones, and before that, The Sopranos.

I haven't time to search for the link now, but there is a new S4C Welsh language detective series soon to be aired that a Danish production company have bought up which promises to do for Aberystwyth what Sarah Lund did for jumpers! I kid you not How weird is that, to have Welsh subtitled into Danish!!

I was gripped by the final two episodes too. One aspect I found difficult to credit though, relating to the conduct of the press. However don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling...

The DVD set of the original is oft-played - Ian Richardson as Urquart one of the great creations of television

Had already flagged this series - looks very good indeed from the trailers I've seen. Spacey is one of the few people who could rival Richardson in the 'vile creep' stakes
