Indeed - and most of us don't see much of it. At least one Nobel Laureate woke up in the morning, and thought he'd died and gone to heaven, as the girls with the candles on their heads came in.

There is usually a long programme on Swedish TV on the prizegiving day. One year was really weird, as the prizegiving is held in the city hall, and I recall performers coming down on ropes from the balconies.

      Recents

The Fallen Idol (Ralph Richardson, music by Alwyn)
The Rocking Horse Winner (Produced by John Mills,Alwyn’s music)
      Geordie (Bill Travers,Alastair Sim,Alwyn again)
The Loves Of Joanna Godden (Googie Withers, music by RVW)

Not decided if they are all keepers yet.
A surprising (well, surprising to me) proportion of people who I thought would find TP TV's offerings of interest haven't even heard of it. I recommend it to all in the hope and expectation that at least some of them will share in its varied delights.

It's one of several movie channels included in my basic Sky package (that is, without paying extra for more movie channels, or sport)

After reading, in the main, very positive reviews of 'Cold War' [Pawel Pawlikowski], I bought the DVD and watched it the other day. A disappointment. It begins superbly; two musicians/ethno-musicologists are touring around post-war rural Poland in search of authentic performers to recruit for a tour of folk acts. There is some stunning B+W cinematography, combined with beautiful and moving performances of folk songs and dances. So far so good, and the insight into the crushing banality of a socialist-realist artistic dogma is subtle and telling. Post-war Berlin looks and feels cold and austere. The emerging romantic relationship that dominates the rest of the film however slowly strays into cinematic and musical clichés - a terribly bohemian Paris, smoky jazz clubs and the like. For so much passion on display it was lifeless and I cared very little for the protagonists. This is apparently the story of his parents, and although it has won any number of awards and been nominated for Oscars, I was seriously unmoved.

We were determined to seek this film out a few weeks ago since it was not at our local multiplex and were very glad we made the effort. Maybe seeing it in the cinema makes for a more compelling experience. The theme of love and political borders was dealt with powerfully, poignantly and truthfully and was very close to our hearts - my wife grew up in East Germany - long story. The images were spellbinding and the soundtrack beautifully evocative (There's a Spotify playlist).

That was also my experience of it, gurney. Perhaps you're right - it certainly was a great cinematic experience...Mrs C also loved it...soundtrack was stunning.

One of my pals was raving about this film, Stan, and loaned me the director's previous film 'Moonlight', which received a few Oscars, I seem to recall. Like your comments about 'Beale Street' I thought the acting was pretty good, and it started very well but seemed to run out of steam about an hour in, so even though it came in at just over an hour and a half, by the end it felt too long. Certainly didn't hit the hypes for me.

                  Hiya Joghn,

It seemed much longer than just over an hour and a half. Are you sure you weren't asleep for the other hour?

I was talking about 'Moonlight', Stan, the Director Barry Jenkins' previous film which is just over an hour and a half long. I haven't seen 'If Beale Street Could Talk', but given your comments and my feelings about 'Moonlight' I doubt I will be hurrying to see it.

I'd not heard of it until I read this post. Looks like it's on Freeview - which I can't get - perhaps not on Freesat (which I can). Is it on internet, or Now TV?

Not that I really need more TV to watch - spent the last few days with hardly any TV watching, other than very short bursts of BBC (News mostly) on iPlayer on an iPad. Did I miss it? Not much!

About the Talking Pictures TV channel. Relive some of the rarest & greatest gems from film history on Sky EPG 343, Freesat 306, Freeview 82 & Youview 82.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          JURASSIC WORLD:FALLEN KINGDOM

                          Has an intriguing end, doesn't it? Isla Nublar has burned and crumbled into the sea (we see the poor Brachiosaur, left behind as the profiteers' ark leaves the shore with the other dinos, overwhelmed by ash and fumes and flames, crying out as it dies....);
The profiteers have been eaten by the rampaging, justly vengeful dinos; in a moment of identifying empathy, the human clone sets them free and..off they go out into the woods, the fields the towns!

... A tearful farewell between Blue (the ultra-intelligent Velociraptor) and Owen, her bonded human; pterodactyls flying free above the ocean, a T. Rex and a Lion roar at each other across a ravine....
Then there's Blue again, wild and free atop a crag, barking at what appears to be the LA Cityscape...

Welcome to the real Jurassic World....! The next film has incredible potential, come on guys, don't blow it!

Not sure about YouView 81 - is that Internet? We can get some Youview channels via BT internet, but not the broadcast ones. Freesat 306 mght work - I'll check it out later this week. Is anything good coming Up?

Talking Pictures and football are just about the only TV I watch.

Plenty of good films coming up https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/schedule/
