Oh yes. It's called rhotacism. 'R' is one of the more difficult sounds (related closely to 'L'). Scots are generally masters at rhotic ('R') sounds.

But remember the rather shameful front page of the Sun when Mr Hodgson was made England manager...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

My brother said his W's as R's. Mother said it was because she dropped him on his head as a baby! I had to have speech therapy when I was about 3 or 4, I still remember attending the clinic, I still have trouble with TH's, as in thistle, luckily, not living in Scotland, I don't often have to say it and I do have a slight lisp still, which I try and control. People can be so cruel, as in Mr. Hodgson's case, but not for Wossy (him being an overpaid sleb)

But do you mean R's as W's (not the other ray round) ? I suspect so

Glad I never tried arm-wrestling with him then!

That's funny - I don't lisp, and yet I was dropped on my head as a baby.

                    No one would ever guess...

That's an affectation. Sometimes he forgets himself and pronounces "R" properly.

I've just finished watching this - saw half days ago. I enjoyed it as a bit of TV and found it quite moving. However we shall never know the truth of their relationship so better, perhaps, to leave it at that.

I have just watched this, and found it one of the most moving dramas I've seen in a long time. The reasons why people do things are usually very complicated, and Victoria Wood's view certainly has the ring of truth. But, as Salymap says, we'll never know. Which it the sadness of it all...

I've owned her (genuine) recording of the Bax Symphonic Variation since it first came out.

Of course, when in Scotland, one always has to remember to try to roll one's Rs!

why has no prosecution been brought against Barrie ? or hasn't he broken a law ? or is it too difficult to prove ? or has everyone forgiven him ?
