    Hockney Stumped

The artist made a tree stump famous in his painting Winter Timber. Now it has been vandalised. Here he exclusively reveals a new sketch of his 'totem'

i confess to feeling rather upset by this vandalism ...

A Bigger Picture is presently in Germany

we found our visit to it in London a true life enhancing experience that has deeply affected our walks in the landscapes of the middle kingdom ...

i know he is a controversial figure, disliked by some ..... but for us his genius is unarguable

    I like his work, calum.

Did you see his multi-image Ipad projection & if so what did you think of it?

Irrespective of the man, it's a mean thing to do. I wasn't keen on his earlier stuff, but I agree with Calum that there's no disputing his ability. I'd be very happy to live with many of his paintings, which is more than I can say for a lot of contemporary "painters". My favourite is "Winter Tunnel", which a he painted a few years ago. Now that he's doing landscapes, and living at least some of the trime in Yorkshire, I think he's mellowing and becoming a greater artist.

I thought it was mesmerising. I have kept my recording of the section of the TV documentary about its production, and have watched it several times - pretty fine on the old HD large screen telly
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I rather liked the comment on the Guardian story that the vandalism was 'real world trolling'
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sad news. I like Hockney - and some of his work is outstandingly good. The locals note that a CCTV camera had recently been installed and proved useless. There are also the inevitable rumours about nearby gypsies. The money artists earn is not necessarily accepted by everyone in this era. He is also seen by many as a controversialist on smoking. The Guardian invited readers to respond to his views on that matter pictorially. Some were angry and submitted trash art. So there are all kinds of possibilities. The main one is that it is was the "work" of what the new zero tolerance police commissioner for Surrey describes as hoodlums.

                Very mean-spirited indeed.

I went to the London exhibition at the Royal Academy three times thanks to friends who are members and it never failed to invigorate me - truly a landmark exhibition for me.

Hockney is renowned for innovation, using new technologies as they become available so the ipad work was no surprise, except that anything an artist does in his 70s is always a surprise, I guess. He's always been very alive to the possibility of the masters of previous centuries using the available technology in their work and he made a TV programme about it.

I think these are two different programmes. The other was about the possible use of optical projection by masters of centuries ago.

Yes, an older programme (from about 10-15 years ago) which tied in with this book:
