    Dreadful vandalism

    Rothko defaced
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Horrific - so easy to do but it seems removable. They're wonderful paintings (IMO)

It doesn't really matter how wonderful they are. It's an appalling thing to do - made worse by the arrogance of saying that it increases the picture's worth.

However, I have a thought - which great works of art would you like to deface? During which piece of great music would you like to break wind?

During which pieces of great music do you break wind routinely?

Well they are getting their % minutes of 'legendary' fame....

Yellowism is an autonomous phenomenon in contemporary culture. It derived from the visual arts and despite this fact, is not classified as art, what is in accordance with its essence. It was defined in 2010 by Marcin Łodyga and Vladimir Umanets. Characteristic feature of yellowism is the lack of a creative element. All manifestations of yellowism are about yellow, are identical in content and differ only in terms of form. Yellowism can easily be seen as a kind of creativity; however, such thinking belies its true nature. In yellowism can be everything what was already in art and it will no longer be art. Moreover , in yellowism can be everything what will happen in the future of art and it will not be art.<<<<<

Surely the graffitti should have been in yellow paint....

Well they have certainly succeeded Google Pages for Marcin Łodyga and Vladimir Umanets are clogged with new entries....Ppwwwwsht

I wish they wouldn't. On the assumption that part of the reason for this vandalism was a desire for publicity, I feel that this desire should be frustrated so far as is possible. Consequently, I shall deliberately refrain from any interest in yellowism. I shall not read about it and I shall not partake in any discussion about it.

I think there are interesting things to think about with regard to the commodification of artistic ideas. NOT that I am suggesting that this was a good idea, but it is interesting that in the media there has been a condemnation of this and an attempt to somehow see it as separate from "historical" art movements that have advocated similar actions. Is it because Rothko (and artist of whom many of us rate very highly indeed) has become so much part of mainstream visual culture ?

again I wouldn't condone this in any way
                            but

                            "Vandalism" can create art........
