"...when he could not pay all the bills... he told me, he "spanked old gentlemen for money" so he could buy Christmas presents."

What are "old gentlemen" to do when Messrs Carr et al salt it all away offshore and so can always pay the bills and buy presents?

He was sort of before my time at his height, but he sounds unique and a hoot
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

R4 - latest issue of "Last Word" had a good appreciation of him - from Theatre Workshop days (was it Barbara Windsor? - can't remember, sorry).

George Harrison's mother apparently said she would not watch any Beatles film unless Victor Spinetti was in it. He is in all of them.
