A couple of other detective series which I don't think have yet been mentioned here - Wycliffe and Whitechapel. Wycliffe ran for five series in the mid-1990s and was unusual for the main character Charles Wycliffe being a detective superintendent being assisted by two detective inspectors. It was filmed in picturesque Cornwall. Whitechapel has run for three series so far and is set in the Whitechapel area of London. It has a pretty impressive cast with Rupert Penry-Jones taking the lead role, with other roles taken by Phil Davis, Steve Pemberton and Alex Jennings among others.

For any Frost fans out there, ITV3 is showing episodes each night this week. This follows Lewis week and Marple week. Who knows what it will be next week...

Except that Kenneth Branagh's Wallander is all about Kenneth Branagh, whereas the Henriksson Wallander is about Wallander.

They're running repeats of the original Swedish Wallander starting next Saturday on BBC4.

I gave up on tonight's Beethoven as can't hear properly at the moment, so I watched the third Wallander programme instead. They saved the best for the last, shock horror it was pretty good. My reaction to the first two episodes was partly borne of the disappointment that with a decent supporting cast, and high production values, the whole thing could have been great if only KB had not been cast as Kurt Wallander. Is the fact that "Kenneth Branagh's Wallander is all about Kenneth Branagh" something to do with the scripts, with too much backstory & precious little interaction with colleagues, or just KB himself? Who would you have cast as KW from the current bunch of UK actors?

I don't understand. You were right (apart from the spelling): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Wallander There were loads of Swedish screen adaptations before the Beeb and Sir Ken came along.

Am I missing something here?

I was merely endeavouring to save Anna from the inevitable disappointment that would result from her googling Wallender. I did wonder whether a search for that variant on his name might produce something like 'an inhabitant of the area around the termination of Hadrian's Wall', but it actually produces no hits at all as far as I can see.

Do you mean the Swedish TV films made between 1994-2007, based on the original novels, with Wallander played by Rolf Lassgard or the TV series with Henriksson? I do hope the latter!

I suppose the Lassgard version is the original in the sense of the first, or earliest, but I sincerely hope, as you do, that it's the Henriksson series that BBC 4 will be offering as part of its antidote to the Olympics.

Bad news indeed. I'm not sure Ken Stott would be on my list for KW, but then he never fitted my mental image of Rebus either. I would have liked to have seen Brian Cox play Rebus.

Brian Cox would be BRILLIANT as Rebus. If not on TV, then why not on radio?
