    Look Out, Katie's Back

She's popped up again, and getting in the way of the music. Gushing introductions; too many superlatives; atrocious pronunciation - when she gets it wrong, and over articulated pronunciation to demonstrate that she is clearly comfortable in every European language. Her enthusiasm in today's lunchtime concert knows no bounds. I heard last going on about Mikhail Pletnev - guess how Pletnev came out.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well, she did have a whole week off. Come back Schubert, all is forgiven!?!?

And she speaks like a machine gun and gabbles everything. And the silly superlatives................!! And her 's' sounds are very like those of Sean Connery.

I heard some of her at lunchtime today and realised that her voice is very like another presenter with an annoying "I'm really saying something very amusing" tone - Fiona Bruce. The reaction was just the same as to the latter's interminable introduction to the Antiques Roadshow: "Stop gushing and get on with the programme ...".

Fiona Bruce ex-Crime Watch, Call My Bluff and now Antiques Roadshow frightens the life out of me with her piercing stare ... and she's everywhere!

That's very unfair Ams, the case against Pletnev was dropped for an utter lack of evidence... it looked like a case of attempted blackmail.

I've been very critical of KD in the past, foisted upon us as a celebrity presenter. I do wince when she announces at the Proms... but I'm a little sorry for her too. Female presenters (and professionals generally) are often under greater scrutiny and pressure, and Katie seems never to have lost her sheer nervousness in her R3 role, which tends to mean she tries too hard - to appear involved, enthusiastic etc..

Mind you, I recall that summer when Myleene Klass "conducted" the interval interviews at the Proms on BBC4... I really didn't know whether to laugh or to cry; smiling and nodding continually at each interviewee her technique was that of a proud mother trying to encourage the best out of a performing child.

That was my point, jlw - poor bloke was completely harassed - 'coming out' publicly would be the last thing I'd expect of him

Shame such episodes follow people around though.

Maybe, and one particular disadvantage they have to contend with now is the fashion for not letting us hear uninterrupted applause at the end of a piece, but to start their spiel about how wonderful the performance was, etc. Most women seem to have to shout to make themselves heard over the applause, whereas with men it's not so noticeable. But of course there's a simple rememdy for this ....
