Gripping new Danish crime series!! "Those Who Kill"

This seems to have passed unnoticed, but I caught up this weekend with a new crime drama from the Danish team, "Those Who Kill" (Den som dræber): overlooked, perhaps, because it's on ITV3 and is hidden away on Thursday evenings at 10pm - but repeated Saturdays at 11pm. There are 6 x 2 hour episodes.

The first one was GRIPPING... faster-paced than The Killing and rather more brutal, not in terms of gore but in terms of thriller verging on horror-levels of tension.

Here's some press material about it:

So Episode 2 is this Thursday (rep: Saturday): can't find any evidence of Episode 1 being on the ITVplayer for rewatching.

I recommend it to all fans of dark crime-thriller stories!

(And of course old friends turn up in new roles: Troels Hartmann, the politician from Killing 1, is the police chief, and the serial killer is from the barracks in Killing 2... )

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I watched it out of curiosity and thought it was OK but not in the same class as The Killing or Borgen, which is probably why ITV put it onto ITV3 instead of ITV1.

The series seems to be a Scandinavian transplant of Wire in the Blood - repeats of which are also broadcast on ITV3.

I didn't see Wire in the Blood... interesting that it's derivative. And I agree it's different from the more cerebral The Killing. But it had me almost on the edge of my seat... and a couple of scenes were so tense that it was tough to watch!!

I realise that I didn't make clear another key difference from The Killing, namely that each 2 hour* episode is a separate story, hence the faster pace and different 'feel'. It lacks the gradual growth and labyrinthine twists and dead ends... as well as the brooding local atmosphere. But ... well, I enjoyed it!

*(90 mins if you ff through the adverts - yes, they are a tension-breaking pain and the ability to skip them a key advantage to recording and watching later)...

I am getting increasingly irritated by the length of the advert breaks on all the non-BBC channels. More and more I tend to get up and do something else for 4 (or 5) minutes. Yes, the total advert time per hour is capped but that cap excludes channel trailers and the sponsor's pre and post break adverts.

Which is why I rarely check the commercial television schedules, hence missing this programme. Past few weeks at 10pm Thursdays I've been watching the repeat of The Singing Detective. However, looking at the trailer posted above it does look rather good, will have to catch it as I am having Danish language withdrawal symptoms! Is there any knitwear in it?

                  You should, Anna.

No prominent knitwear... The heroine is a little more glam than Sarah L. A scarf was crucial in Ep 1 though...

Well, I thought it a bit predictably formulaic, but I'll give it another try next week.

Probably has more to do with the subtitles.

Why should just about every crime drama be about death and gore? I can't think of any current programmes that are about anything else.
