Iconic Record Labels

I was interested to read about ACT in today's Guardian.

I would also thoroughly recommend the recently released DVD "Sounds and Silence - Travels with Manfred Eicher" about the ECM label. This is a sensitively made film with footage of Eicher and several ECM signed artists in various different musical genres.

I didn't know that any record labels were used as icons. Is it the greek or russian orthodox church which use them in this manner?

I always have a special feeling about Berlin Classics, Testament, BIS (for their dynamics!) EMI-Toshiba, the Russian Venezia label, those Japanese Extons of Svetlanov etc., (Pony) Canyon Classics... so many smaller labels disappeared, or stopped issuing the gold CDs (eg Classic Records)... but with SACD, HQCD, SHM... it all became almost too diverse to be sustained. As for choice...

I suppose the current big treat would be high-resolution downloads eg. Chandos, HDTT, Pristine, but only when some really rare or special rep. or performance appears on them.
