Can we look forward to another spin-off: 'Young Fred Thursday'?

New series announced, starting 10 February.

I must say, I like the 'period' poster they've produced to trail the series:

(Let's hope the 'changed game' includes improved scripts.... )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Still not sure whether we shall watch the new series … if we do, it will be because Fred Thursday is apparently still on the scene.

See interview with Roger Allam in today's Times. Sounds as if things start from a pretty low ebb, for everybody, especially Fred and Morse.

The Austin 1100 doing "hot pursuit" doesn't quite cut it for me.

... are you sure it's an Austin 1100? Given that it's Oxford, mightn't it have been a Morris 1100??

The Austin or Morris 1100 was only a uniform patrol vehicle. Hot pursuit in those days was done by the likes of the Rover or Triumph 2000 or 3500, as I recall - followed in the mid-1970s by the Ford Granada - I actually got to drive one in the winter of 1978- 1979, when a member of the South-East Regional Crime Squad turned up at the RSPB nature reserve where I was working at the time for a spot of R&R from chasing villains and shared the derelict caravan where I was living on the reserve. He lent me his car to drive to my aunt's house a few miles away for my weekly bath and hot meal, with the simple instruction "Don't bend it" . The villains at the time were driving Ford Transits - perhaps still are.

                      - a considerable improvement on some of the offerings in the last series but one: and the opening was a hoot!

....I've just had a dream about a dystopian future....I'm sure it was that Austin 1100 that set it off....

Ah, but those villainous Ford Transits were at least made in Southampton.

Nah - you watched Mark Kermode later on doing film review. He always uses words like that and phrases such as "post apocalyptic".

Did you spot the touching tribute to Colin Dexter a few minutes from the end?
