If memory serves in the early Morse books he was, I think, Welsh but for whatever reason Whately was chosen for the TV series and so he changed.............was the Jaguar not originally a Lancia?

In the early books, Lewis is vaguely Welsh, enjoys egg and chips, driving Morse's Lancia fast, and is as old as, if not older than, Morse. In the remaining books, written after the TV series began, everything is vague enough for him to be a younger Geordie. The car becomes a Jaguar, though.

Really good news. I've kept the recording of the original Endeavour so that I can watch it again - and spot all the references to the later Morse books/films. My feeling is that the Endeavour series could be far better than the Lewis programmes.

I thought this second episode of the new "Endeavour" series was much better than the first. Slightly stretching credibility, nonetheless it was a luxury watch. The pursuit of the serial killer with a taste for operatic clues was very much in the manner of the old "Morse" series (in fact, it was possibly a wee bit derivative from that "Morse" episode where he was singing in "The Magic Flute" and subsequently the target of a chameleonic nutter played by Ian McDiarmid).

Some good moments and sumptuous views of Oxon. of course. Plus fun to see the youthful Strange (wearing a police helmet apparently a couple of sizes too small for his big head... "matey") and the almost adolescent Max the forensic surgeon (who was given some very good lines)

Well worth a watch imo

Glad to hear it Caliban because I wasn't taken with the first one, but I'll plough on. Roger Allam is the saving grace for me

Like everyone else I thoroughly enjoyed the Endeavour stories. It seems that where Oxford and Colin Dexter are concerned, everything turns to gold. Lewis was good after the demise of John Thaw, but IMHO Endeavour is better still. An excellent series in every way.

Excellent episode, except they used the same clip of green woodpecker over and over for the woodland scenes.

(I should add that if you are into birdsong this is as distinctive as the operatic clips we hear!)
