Sadly, she also says (at least in my copy) that Abigail Thaw plays the opera singer. Er, no.....

A mistake repeated in The Guardian's review of the programme.

A mistake in the Guardian?? Unthinkable!!

Seriously, though, I didn't watch this, not generally being a fan of Detective shows- Sherlock excepted- but I will certainly try and catch a repeat as a result of what I've read here.

Totally agree re Roger Allam, Caliban.

Many years ago I had the 'bright idea' of a 'tec series based on some 1920s stories about a toff 'tec and Allam was my ideal casting. Needless to say, the idea never came to fruition but RA really is the business.

Yes, it makes a change for her not to be thoroughly unpleasant, but she does get overexcited about certain members of the masculine gender. Her use of adjectives to suit her purpose is a kind of weapon; her use of language is brilliant, but her inner sentiments are another matter.

Just spent a very pleasurable 2 hours watching this. Almost unalloyed pleasure... Really well done, I thought... Only reservation was about the rather cack-handed 5 minutes revealing the somewhat improbable perpetrator, and poor old young Morse's badly-written voice over at that point - very stilted.

But otherwise, yes! a treat! Splendid to see Allam and Malahide going eyeball to eyeball: the highlight of holiday viewing, IMO

And the delicate references were well done (esp the beat after the meeting with Ms Thaw as the editor of the Oxford Mail

Well I'm not so sure. Was there not a one-off to start the Lewis spin-off. If the audience and critical reaction (and that of overseas partners - I noticed that PBS network Masterpiece credited http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/schedule/index.html ) is sufficiently strong, I suspect we may see more of young Morse...

You can vote for it in the super-duper Radio Times poll on the subject!!

If you have Freesat, and an appropriate sat box, try Channel 903. Worked on our Humax, anyway. Currently the adverts are limited and short, but I expect they'll fix that! Grrr!

Just caught up with this. Recorded last night, and watched tonight, thereby missing all the adverts.

I thought it was very good, and I could certainly stand more of Allam and Evans. 248 RPA was there, and it's now owned by a "vegetable", so who knows what might happen?

A very worthwhile way to spend two hours, with the very affectionate references to the 'real' Morse. I thought that, as a production, it was superior to the recent Lewis spin-offs and possibly better than the later non-Dexter Morse episodes. I do hope that there will be some follow-up episodes.
Since you said that I admit that I saw 'The Remorseful Day' once, but don't want to see it again. He was a sympathetic character, flawed but lovable.

I'm with you on that saly. I couldn't watch "Remorseful Day" again. I did, however, enjoy "Endeavour" and hope, along with VodkaDilc, that there will be some forthcoming episodes. We were both keen followers of Morse from beginning to end. It was broadcast over here by our PBS station WGBH and had a large number of fans. I've tried to like "Lewis" but his character seems so grumpy (though he has every right to be considering his misfortunes.) Hathaway (Laurence Fox) is the more interesting character in "Lewis".

My daughter refuses it read or watch the Remorseful Day claiming that to her Morse will never die!! Marthe all Geordies are grumpy and we do have a lot to moan about.

Anton, I didn't realize that Lewis was a Geordie. That throws a different light on the subject. Actually the only Geordie I know at all well is an ex-pat who now lives in Tennessee. He's not grumpy at all; but then his wife, born in Chile and brought up in Cumbria, is quite a dish! Poor Lewis is forever mourning the loss of his wife. Somehow I associated Kevin Whately with Derbyshire, but I suppose that's because of "Peak Practice."

If memory serves in the early Morse books he was, I think, Welsh but for whatever reason Whately was chosen for the TV series and so he changed.............was the Jaguar not originally a Lancia? Or am I just being a thick as well as grumpy Geordie? The aforementioned daughter has met KW and found him to be incredibly nice and down to earth and not the slightest grumpy in real life.
