I'm so glad I decided to watch this - I thought it was excellent in every respect. Colin Dexter's brief appearance suggests that it also met with his approval. I'm not ashamed to admit that I had a lump in the throat at that shot of the rear-view mirror as they were waiting for the lights to change.

Totally agree - good story, well acted and with just enough "teasers" for Morse fans without clogging up the story. I especially liked John Thaw's daughter as the Newspaper Editor saying "Have I met you before? Another life, perhaps." Anachronistic, perhaps, but a lovely tribute to the old and new.

I'm afraid my reaction to the rear mirror shot was much closer to tears than lumps in throat. A very worthwhile way to spend two hours, with the very affectionate references to the 'real' Morse. I thought that, as a production, it was superior to the recent Lewis spin-offs and possibly better than the later non-Dexter Morse episodes. I do hope that there will be some follow-up episodes.

The school uniform worn by the girls struck me as very accurate - in all its gruesome detail.

I thought it was excellent, period feel spot-on. Alison Graham in RT always prefaces any mention of Roger Allam with "the sublime" - she's not wrong.
