"Rev" Series 2, Ep. 4: a comedy classic

I thought the fourth episode of "Rev", especially the second half which is largely the inter-faith football match, was absolute comedy gold.

That lengthy football sequence, which had tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks, then gave way to a twist and a concluding few minutes which were genuinely moving, I thought, and had the odd tear of a different sort welling up. Real quality - the last 15 - 16 minutes are among the best things I've seen on screen

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

... this is just gold stuff.

Tom Hollander - Olivia Colman - Miles Jupp - Simon McBurney

Towards the end - when the Rev ("Vicarage", as Colin call him ), comforting the black kid, learns that his rival the PE teacher has fallen off his bike - his look of furtive glee - and then when he realises he's dead - the mortification - glorious...

Arguably topped only by last week's scene following The Rev Smallbone's flirtation with Ecstasy. As you rightly say, it's comedy of the highest (religious) order

Yes! Glad you agree! Perfection, isn't it...

And yet all the official commentators are describing the series as not in the laugh out loud category. Really? I haven't had as many unrestrained laughs since, with the exception of from reading some of the posts in this forum.

I agree, it's a great series and the last few minutes last Thursday were beautifully done and indeed very moving.

It's Colin and Nigel who do it for me. I'm not sure that Miles Jupp isn't just making Nigel up as he goes along (that's perfection, I guess) and I just love Colin's left-field view on the world "Crack squirrels, Vicarage!"

Simon McBurney is such a superbly, gleefully controlling barsteward, always just on the side of the angels, but I wouldn't want to cross him.

A top-notch series and thanks to Caliban for constantly pushing it at me (Matron!) until I finally cracked

Tonight was brilliant, a lovely cameo by Richard E. Grant, and a dilemma for Adam. Next week the Arch Deacon reveals, I think, a possibly gay secret! Love it!

Pricelessly funny. I have never seen Rev before THEN suddenly realised that the Church used was the one in Shoreditch where I got smoothed over on Feedback by Roger Bolton when they did a programme about what was wrong with Radio 3 and cut out everything important that french frank and I said. Still, I enjoyed the concert of King Arthur by Purcell that day.

... I think episode six (where the lay-reader (Miles Jupp) aspires to ordination, and the Archdeacon (Simon McBurney) aspires to the bishopric of Stevenage) - is about the most perfect piece of television (writing, directing, acting) that I have seen in the last ten years.

...and there's still the 'Christmas Special' to come! Let's hope that, unlike most Christmas Specials, it manages to maintain the standard of the previous six weeks. IMO, both series have been unqualified triumphs.

There's been so many totally brilliant moments in Rev that it's hard to single out a best one, it's just been so perfect. There are 3 clips from Tuesday's Christmas Special on the BBC website. I wonder if the first series will get a repeat? I'm sure a lot of people might have missed it. Has anyone seen Miles Jupp live? I saw him doing his Cricketing show called Fibbers in the Heat.

Edit: One memory from the first series is Adam dancing, totally off his head, at the Church Vicars and Tarts disco. Classic!
