Inspired by the radio 3 essays on mad artists I have bought myself a book "drawing for the absolute beginner" and started sketching a cup. Made me wonder...any of you got artistic skills ?

I used to paint what is strictly known as 'bodycolour' when I was a child, and at school it was considered my best skill. But then I started composing and forgot painting.
In recent years I've finished composing and started painting again, small (postcard size) abstract landscapes. I have read , or 'skimmed through' books of the 'how to paint' variety but they usually stress academic skills and long practice which repels me.
Similarly, I avoid 'amateur painter' competitions , as its' only too obvious that the winner will be someone who produces a close up of a face, usually of a young woman. I like to be a bit more unpredictable than that.
