Tom Phillips, artist, translator and composer, dies at the age of 85

A little unfortunate that the Guardian obit plays up the recording of Irma released on Eno's Obscure label. Tom was decidedly critical of Gavin Bryars's assertion of his (Gavib's) role as composer, rather than interpreter or realiser in relation to that recording. He was much happier with that made later by AMM and friends, and of https://www.tomphillips.co.uk/studio...t-lumen-church

Yes, that's very sad, I'm a great admirer of TP's work. I'm sure I would have first encountered it through the Obscure LP of Irma, so it wasn't a complete waste of time, although I never found the Bryars version particularly convincing. I wonder why he hasn't been generally considered as one of Britain's leading visual artists of the late 20th and early 21st century, which as far as I'm concerned he was. I guess he and his art weren't sufficiently "larger than life."

It would be nice if the typos in the thread title were corrected by someone.

Ouch, indeed, regarding the particularly dire typo. Please can a Host make the appropriate adjustment to the errant "r" and transfer it where it belongs and add the second "l" to his family name?

For those not familiar with his work, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2xaJKDIiJo, which video is not embeddable.

Well before he worked with Peter Greenaway on those first 8 Cantos, Tom Phillips translated and illustrated in his own inimitable way, Inferno:

Strange. I have compared what I posted with the URL of that page and they are identical. I have edited the post to repaste the very same URL and it works fine in preview. Whether it works for others is another matter. Please try and report back on the results. Looks like there may have been a glitch in the automated compression of the URL.

Hope this is correct. My first attempt deleted 90% of the title so I had to go from memory. Will have another go if necessary.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I've now found that when clicked on your original post the link works fine - problem solved!
