I have just spent some time admiring Chris's paintings. Didn't realize until today that Curalach's avatar was his own painting which reminds me so very much of the work of the late Donald Hamilton Fraser. Any influence there? Any chance of posting a link to a bigger picture of the avatar? Seems to be no end to the talents on this board! Just green with envy!

We could start a thread on colour names, rather than go off topic. Oh well. My mother was a Green, from a very large and old established Kentish family. My aunt was called Violet Green, always known as Pinkie. One can't get more colourful than that. Why are people called Green, Brown, White, Black,Blue etc but not yellow, orange, pink, purple or mauve? This is the result of insomnia, useless thoughts in the night. Sorry.

I'm going to have another look at Chris's paintings.

Hi salymap, Iain, madamesuggia and co,

I decided to take a break from buildings so I have done a portrait of my daughter and added it to my Troovi site.

Iain, I am sure you sent me details of your website about the time that the R3 site closed but I cannot find the email. Any chance of having it again, perhaps in a PM, if you get a minute?

                  Chris,
I have sent you a PM with details.
You are very brave. I have never yet painted anyone I know. Did your daughter sit for you or did you paint from a photograph?
If that's your first effort you should be well pleased.
                  Iain

Hi, Iain. I confess that I did it from a photo. It is very hard to find willing victims. I might join a life class soon. Steve, my tutor at the moment believes that is Ok to use photos as long as (1) I make a careful drawing freehand from the photo (2) then do a quick sketch in 5 minutes (3) then the same in 1 minute. After that I can draw it on the paper, board, canvas that I intend to paint on. He puts drawing very high. In fact I altered the final picture. The original photo was a publicity one done for her singing. It was taken next to a screen made from those thick glass bricks which gave were orange and gave her a Peter Dickinson look. I changed the bricks into a large window with a veiled view through net curtains.
                    bws,
                    Chris.

Chris, nothing wrong with using photographs as a source. I use them a lot when painting boats where it is necessary to get reasonably accurate detail. I prefer photos that I have taken myself and I prefer to have a lot of them. Not always possible though. I spend a lot of time on the drawing of these paintings.
One of the pleasures of more abstract work is the lack of detail drawing and the freedom of expressing purely with the paint, colour and form.
                      Cheers,
                      Iain

Chris you may have seen that HS was worried that his Troovi site would be deleted as it is after 20 days without use, apparently. Did you know this i wonder?

What does that mean? Without any new items being uploaded?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This is what Troovi say - "A collection is only deleted if it has not been accessed by somebody for more then 30 days (free) respectively 90 days (premium)."
I take access to mean just looking, not necessarily uploading or downloading.

I've been adding photos to my photo file every few days to be on the safe side . I just wish HS had left some of his very funny comments by them but he has cropped the comments I see.
