    Jean-Luc Godard (1930 - 2022)

Godard was the inspired maverick of the French New Wave, the Lennon to Truffaut’s McCartney, and kept his radical imagination to the very end

I lost touch with what Godard was doing a long time ago, but it does make me sad to see this.

It's in the nature of film-making that not many directors have the wish or the opportunity to spend their whole working lives creating films outside the commercial conventions of the medium. Surely Godard was one of the few film directors whose work can stand alongside the most essential and original creators of the 20th century in other artistic disciplines.

I like 'Breathless', 'Masculin-feminin', 'Eloge de lamour' 'Weekend', and 'Pierrot-le-fou' and several of his others , but 'Alphaville' and 'Made in USA' are not to my taste. But I do hail him as one of the most original auters who took the cinematic art a significant step forward and had a huge influence on cinema and TV after him.
