It is looking very sad this week isn't it? Recycled old comedies among TOTP and OGWT.....(and good old When Harry met Sally...lovely movie, but...)
Once so fresh, now so old-BBC-fusty. And I remain a huge supporter of the BBC and PSB, especially for News. But this channel could still be wonderful...if it had enough cash. Well, some hope... its back to political will, I'm afraid. Then the Viewers and Listeners leave, and the prophecy self-fulfils...

Looks even worse as Sky have done some great new Classic Album features recently, including Screamadelica, The Who Sell Out, Soul II Soul etc...

Also I would extend this to include jazz documentaries - scandalous that Allan Holdsworth, for example, is completely ignored.

There must be loads of serious 'Classical Music' documentaries in the archives that could be re-broadcast!

Yes they are but the problem is the rights issues - particularly payments to star performers.

What, musicians expecting to be paid? Whatever next.

Far cheaper to spin commercial recordings where musicians were paid a one-off fee and waived royalties.

It’s much more complicated than that. Most people contracted for a TV programme or film will be “bought out” ie all rights in perp for a one off fee. The very top talent ( conductors , soloists, singers) will often only licence the rights for a set number of showings - that can make repeats expensive . What complicates things even further is that sometimes the paperwork has been lost or the original contract doesn’t cover the modern digital world with its multiple repeats and online availability.

                    .
Yep the copyright ‘industry’ (not just lawyers) make way more money out of it all than rank and file musos and actors. It’s all just rent seeking and (in some cases eg movies) stifles creativity ...

Response to the original (post #1) criticism.........

Arts figures leap to BBC’s defence over classical music TV output

Leading figures in the arts have defended the BBC’s classical music programming following accusations that the broadcaster’s attitude towards the genre shows “negativity verging on hostility”.

The letter responded to claims from the commentator Norman Lebrecht and three acclaimed film-makers, Sir Humphrey Burton, Tony Palmer and Barrie Gavin, that Younghusband’s disinterest in classical music had deterred film-makers from pitching to the BBC

………….A BBC spokesperson said last week: “The BBC is home to an unrivalled range of classical music on TV and is the biggest commissioner in the UK. We are proud of the quality and depth of our classical TV content, such as recent series Black Classical Music: The Forgotten History, with Lenny Henry and Suzy Klein, and Being Beethoven, commissioned by Jan Younghusband for BBC Two/Four.
“Our newly introduced commissioning structure will create a powerhouse for arts and classical music working closely with Alan Davey and Radio 3 to continue to bring even greater specialist depth, modern storytelling and ambition for the future.”……………

Mmm, I mean, the last paragraph, given what we know, hardly inspires confidence............

Most of the "Arts figures" I've heard of seem to have worked for the BBC and/or Radio 3, and not all have anything to do with classical music anyway. I like the idea that “The BBC is home to an unrivalled range of classical music on TV" - and here are two programmes to prove it.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well I suppose if no-one else is putting out classical music TV programmes then the Beeb will be unrivalled - along the lines of the one-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind?

and with public money available to do so.

I understood Sky Arts had classical music programmes too?
