Cheers Pet. I had wondered whether Bernard had ever returned to the piece so it was good to get that confirmation.

I was a bit puzzled by the reference to having six great years at the LPO when his tenure was double that.

Did that imply the relationship got a bit rockier after that? I probably need to revisit the Simon Munday book.

A new Haitink biography is now urgently required!

There is this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but there is no English edition and my German isn't good enough to cope.

Had a look at some German reviews out of curiosity. This one summarises it as a slim volume, readable, not many surprises. Three stars.

I discovered that one of his favourite books is Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus, which he read in German to improve his knowledge of that language.

Yes, a soft spot for it for a few years now; recently in the the swiftly impassioned, typically operatic Hervé Niquet recording on Qobuz. There's a lovely new release of the second, D Minor one from Frieder Bernius in Stuttgart, a source that has already given us the C Minor, some excellent Zelenka and a recent, glorious Beethoven Missa Solemnis too....

Listen to Kammerchor Stuttgart in unlimited on Qobuz and buy the albums in Hi-Res 24-Bit for an unequalled sound quality. Subscription from £10.83/month

'Conducting Is A Riddle - Conversations and Essays'. It would certainly keep my German up to scratch, but I've already got far too many books waiting to be read! I found a German review which gives it 3 stars, pointing out that there are very few surprises and very little is given away when it comes to personal matters. He was invited, twice, to conduct the New Year's Concert in Vienna: 'that orchestra, in that atmosphere - impossible!' He also felt the same way about conducting at Bayreuth: 'I wouldn't feel right on the "Green Hill"' (which he once visited briefly).

What about the 2009 Chicago on CD? Worth an ear or two?

Indeed it is. Like Peter Quantrill, reviewing the VPO Salzburg DVD for the latest Gramophone, I heard Haitink conduct Bruckner 7 with very nearly every orchestra with whom he conducted the piece including the Chicago SO. I think this music will forever be associated with him in my mind.

Just uncovered where I tucked last year's Prom performance away, both the stereo and binaural versions. It's a shame that they did not offer a binaural version of the Beethoven. Still, mustn't look a gift-horse in the mouth. PM me if you feel in need.

Definitely, a 10/10 from Dave Hurwitz notwithstanding.

I'll stream from QOBUZ, later. For the moment I am lapping up Prom 60 from last year.

Thank you. I have often wondered about the New Year concert if not Bayreuth.

Just watched the documentary - marvellous quiet playing and shape to the sounds he got from orchestras. In many ways a troubled soul - got the impression that he hides a lot inside a very calm exterior.

Reminded by the documentary to get round to hearing Cherubini ‘s Requiem properly . What a terrific piece it is especially in the Concert Spirituel/Niquet recording coupled with a strange but disturbing requiem by Plantade for Marie Antoinette . A great record.
