For those who enjoyed the Bridcut film I can strongly recommend a 2016 Haitink documentary entitled 'It comes my way...' which is available on the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall site. I preferred it to the BBC film, which it complements, but both are very fine.

Bernard Haitink has been one of the most successful and popular figures in the world of classical music since the 1960s. Before he announced his retirement from the concert circuit in 2019, he was one of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s main guest conductors for over 50 years. Through recordings of concerts, rehearsals and personal conversations, our film portrait provides an insight into the intellectual world of Haitink, who describes music as his “elixir of life”.

Thanks Pet, I’ve still got this to watch. I liked your description of the master suddenly becoming much more forthcoming upon opening scores.

On again this evening and watched again - yes, quietly revelatory and moving.

I was particularly struck this time by what he said about his experiences of wartime (that photo of his 5th birthday party) and liberation…

        I miss BH

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
