    Bernard Haitink documentary

According to the BBC Media site, BBC2 will be showing a new documentary about Bernard Haitink this Autumn. No date announced as yet, but as it’s John Bridcut film, it should be well worth waiting for.

    “ Bernard Haitink, The Enigmatic Maestro (1 x 90’)

Following the success of his portrait of Dame Janet Baker, acclaimed documentary-maker John Bridcut moves his lens to the retirement, at the age of 90, of one of the world’s most admired conductors, Bernard Haitink.

In a feature-length film for BBC Two, John Bridcut explores the secrets of the art of conducting with Haitink himself and some of the international musicians who’ve worked with him in his 65-year career.”
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Definitely worth looking out for - thank you!

According to the BBC Music Magazine it is being broadcast on Saturday, September 26 on BBC2. No time was mentioned. There's an excellent article by John Bridcut in the magazine to whet the appetite.

More details should be available on Saturday, perhaps. The current online listings only go up to the 24th.

Can you provide a link? I've found the same as Bryn, that the schedule only goes up to September 24.

Agreed. It's usually to use something like Google, rather than the Beeb's internal search facility.

If Bridcut's previous documentaries are any guide then this one should be well worth watching. I do hope that he manages to draw out some interesting gems, even the odd indiscretion, from the normally taciturn Haitink, who, at his age, could afford to throw a little caution to the winds.

Incidentally, Tomorrow morning at 11:00 Sky Arts is showing Haitink’s 90th birthday concert with the LSO: Mozart Piano Concerto No 22 with Till Fellner, and Bruckner Symphony No 4.

And of course, it’s now available to all on Freeview Channel 11 (sadly not in HD)

I haven't yet got into the habit of checking what's on offer from Sky Arts now that it's free-to-air, so many thanks for the heads-up. I wonder if it will be in HD on Freesat?

                            I had no idea... thanks
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
