Tremendous actor. There used to be parts of his superb performance as Crocker-Harris in the BBC drama version of Rattigan’s The Browning Version on YouTube . Absolutely got the air of defeat the role needs . The production stays faithful to the downbeat original and is thus so much better than the sentimentalised film with Michael Redgrave - though that’s a good performance as well.

Fundamentally, his RSC days are for me far and away the most satisfying for all the LoR fame he accrued.

He was brilliant as Lenny in the excellently crafted RSC-casted film of Pinter's The Homecoming

        Well worth a watch

Oh gosh, that’s sad. (I hadn’t twigged he’d been knighted, incidentally).

He was key to one of the great theatrical experiences of my life, playing King Lear on the smallest of the National Theatre stages... Visceral stuff, and only a few metres away in that auditorium, full of rage and tenderness and courage (not least as he got 100% starkers in the storm scene).... A never-to-be-forgotten production which I had to go back and see 3 times to relive the power of the thing.

          RIP
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes, and isn't it interesting / revealing that he rarely ever used the 'Sir' in any context? Unlike a number of othre theatrical knights we might mention.........!!

The BBC lunchtime news played a fragment of him as Lear, presumably from TV footage.

I think they did a TV version of the production which lost a lot of the concentration of the original

Lovely anecdote on Twitter from Sam West (I’d forgotten that his dad Timothy played Gloucester in that Lear production):

I expect we'll be getting that, soon.

Such a great actor. Indeed his Shakespeare was something else. He acted for what he was in, more than anything else. RIP

Mrs A saw him in Henry V in Stratford in 1965. She admitted to me she had a slight crush on him at the time...and at a distance you understand.
                        RIP IH

Absolutely! I remember him best in the Granada series "Game, Set and Match" based on the Len Deighton books. The series was a ratings disaster for Granada, but I couldn't get enough of it. Apparently Len Deighton didn't like the way it had been transposed to T.V. and refused to allow it to be repeated or released on video (then) during his lifetime. As Len Deighton's still alive and living on Guernsey, I suppose we won't be treated to any repeats. I DID obtain a set of pirated D.V.D.s of indifferent quality, but still showing Ian Holm's acting style to excellent effect! The Cold War ended 30 or so years ago, but that series of programmes still make my spine tingle.
