It was nice while it lasted

So while on an epic drive from Bangor to Aldebugh today I listened to the whole of Broadcasting house
Seems like the BBC is going to lose the funding
So for those who liked the idea of orchestras, ensembles etc it's bye bye to those i'm afraid
Petroc made a bit of an effort to defend but sadly not enough

Why does everyone talking about the BBC almost only talk about TV ?

So to all of those who voted for the Tories, well done you

I thought the "when it lasted" was a reference to broadcastings of bleeding chunks!

That said, from a purely selfish pov I feel split over the future or otherwise of the BBC. On the one hand I will miss the good remaining bits of Radio 3, the few that's left of them such as COTW, the Proms, jazz programmes; and on the other not being able to wake up to Toady on Radio 4, which gives some idea of the state of the world and country, however liimited and misrepresentive, or hearing Any Questions on Saturday while having me lunch. It would be so nice if the BBC were to go back to what it was up to about a decade ago - and one was critical enough of it even back then, when the slide in standards was already well underway.

But the slide in standards was always directly the result of government cuts, and other pressures to popularise and market itself (i.e. make money rather than experiment and adventure and commission...)...

We need an objective, publicly funded News Service, New Music Service and much else. It serves democracy in a very basic way. This government wants to destroy it of course...
.....while they have the majority and the chance.... hence all those Spitting Image Puppets chorusing in the Cabinet Meetings...

        Political Opposition, anyone...?

Sky News as the main critique of Johnsonian-Cummingsian Hubris? Well fancy that....

        Do whatever you can.....
I've just signed the petition calling on the government to stop their attack on our BBC. We need an independent national broadcaster we can trust. Please sign and share today.

The Times seems to think that the gvt plan is for the BBC to keep R3, R4 and the World Service, but to flog off most of the other radio stations; and to reduce resources for the BBC website.

Do the times 'journalists' really think that or are they simply lobbying for it?

I'm not so fussed about BBCTV, and I don't listen to the other BBC radio output, but what really concerns me about losing R3 is that for all the slide in quality of programming, while the station exists the musicmaking also continues(orchestras etc) and there can exist a small hope that things might improve on the broadcast front. Once it's gone, that hope/possibility also goes.

Because it's a TV licence to fund the BBC? Anyone who thinks a little bit further will say 'but I don't need a licence to listen to BBC radio' which seems to translate into 'the fee doesn't fund radio'
As for the orchestras etc - 'what are they - you mean my hard earned money is being used to pay poncey elitist classical musicians for their hobby?'

Well, I'm a regular listener to BH, but have to say I found today's immensely dispiriting. I fancy that there had already been a right-royal row backstage before the three guests arrived to talk live, esp between Mr Trelawney and Ms Cameron, which did not dim or simmer but rather sparked. And while I can see why Petroc HAD to bring up the BBC news snippet, he must have known with the woman in the room as given there was going to be a clash between ignorant ideology and practicalities.

My other guess is that if the Tories really do get round to scrapping the licence fee and more or less making BBC into a totally subscription service, it will lose them hugely the next and the next election. They will have majorly misunderstood and miscalculated the place the BBC - partic radio - has and will go on having in the lives of millions in UK AND worldwide. Those looking for pop, rock, show-biz will go elsewhere but have done for literally decades, so, yes - but e.g the BBC News and World Service are massively influential and much store is set by their impartiality and news reporting - which is what Cummings et al in Whitehall are most scared of!

I'd cut costs by axing Radio 2 root and branch....fetch me coat, sir..?

Now, NONE or very little of that could possibly be shoehorned into a BH end-of-prog slotette, but...........

Elsewhere in the prog, IMO it has lost a lot of its whimsical humour, sense of fun, slightly bizarre mix that made it compulsive Sunday a.m. listening, and I wonder what has gone on behind the scenes in editing etc to make this happen. VERY, very sad. Today's edtn was NOT typical of so much of what we used to hear.

Many thanks, signed and shared. There’s plenty wrong with the Beeb, but getting rid of it would obviously be a whole lot wronger. Quite how this once reasonable country has got into this pit of hell doesn’t matter, it’s getting out that’s the important bit.

too late - BJ will do what he is told to do - support of Kultur is not a vote earner among the new Tory supporters up north - he needs to find some way as it won't take long for the Red Wall voters to realise that nothing north of Birmingham is going to reach them for many years and that it will be too expensive and no faster to reach the north once the transfer time is added but it will allow much easier commuting from the area north of Watford as getting rid of the Birmingham trains allows better commuting in a relatively undeveloped commuter area.

Which reminds me - parliamentary petitions can't be made at present, so that route is closed. No guesses for the priority status for setting up the committee again so that petitions can be made...

I don't think they do - merely to re-educate it - maybe there is a Chinese company bidding for it while we bleat.
