    Lucian Freud RIP - 21.07.11

... his portrayal of an overweight nude woman sleeping on a couch sold in 2008 for $33.6m (£20.6m)
    Fancy!

I cannot comment on the ridiculous prices that great art and football players raise in auction these days but I did like Freud's paintings and particularly his drawings. R.I.P.

The bit that got me laughing was:

      overweight nude woman
The BBC's web obituary surely can't have been written by an art lover?! (Or a feminist?)

What i admire about Freud's work is how it has evolved over a very long time and how he has painted exactly what he wants to paint. The portraits of Leigh Bowery are gorgeous in both their execution & the way in which he challenges us to think about 'beauty' and 'value' and 'appropriateness' in art. Watch & listen to the short video clip on the right-hand side - this woman speaks eloquently of how Freud has changed her life.

Hats off gentlemen ... a genius!

Whether it was his objective or not, I see good politics in his work. To paint people as they are, and to admire that, is surely the very opposite of the aryan model. The fact that he fathered huge numbers of children could also be seen as an artistic statement against the holocaust.

I do hope that there will be renewed interest in his work, and among the younger generations. The overwhelming cultural tide has been towards certain versions of physical perfectionism, often with the counter-balance of ever imperfect ways.

I have mentioned this before but it was alas liberalism which opened the door to that phenomenon, almost certainly unintentionally. And if it were not for the fact that it is non-discriminatory in terms of specific groups - it afflicts them all - it would be seen as essentially fascist in tone. The fact that it is rarely comprehended as such is one that should worry us all.

              Why is it ridiculous?

Whatever the quality of his art, there is no excuse for overpopulating the world in this (or any other) way.

Yes, I do accept that Eine, and didn't seek to endorse it. As responses go, I can think of more appropriate ones. It just seems to me that it could be viewed in that light. It is unusual behaviour. But the Reverend Solomon Burke had 26 children without any such connotations. There could therefore have been many other reasons!
