Anybody recognise any of the filming locations? New College Oxford, the Botanical Gardens, the Oxford Canal are fairly clear. The London locations are confusing. The book describes Mrs Coulter’s apartments being 'in a grand mansion block on the north of the Thames'. Given that, I wondered whether the interior might have been filmed at The Savoy. The façade looks a bit like Senate House (the UL library building). On close inspection, it’s neither. Presumably shot in cheaper locations to save costs. Not a bad production. Just enough glitz and suspense to hold our attention until Christmas.
And the tune ends too soon for us all

      - even so, I think he has a point about the patronising hype with which the continuity announcer introduced the first episode (I think it was this that put me in such a grumpy receptive mood about the opening "geddit?" script last week). And about the crassness of the production in comparison to the superior standards of the books - as jc mentioned, that extra scene (not in the book) in "our" world with the clunky dialogue making clear that this was a parallel universe topic.

It's quite a watchable Telly series, but the treatment (I would whole-heartedly agree with Cali's "Harry Potter / Fringe mash-up with a touch of Game of Thrones", were it not that I don't know what "Fringe" is ) falls far, far short of the orgasmic experience that the hype suggests is on offer. (And far, far short of the literary subtlties offered in the books - at this rate, the third of the series will have to be retitled The Blatantly Obvious Knife.)

I think that Montreal is credited, but I don't know what might have been filmed there and why.

A very slow-burn that may not ignite. After the hype, disappointment.

I am unable to comment constructively on the hype around the project. I watch, after broadcast, via the iPlayer. I thus fail to encounter such hype.

                  - which, on reflection, is how I listen to most R3 these days (and for exactly the same reasons).

A rather fun US series (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fringe_(TV_series)) about paranormal goings-on, which developed into an exploration of a parallel world similar to earth but with differences - NB: it seems to be a given that any alternate world should feature airships (see also Man in the High Castle, the Amazon series based on Philip K Dick about a post WW2 Axis victory world in parallel with the real world: dirigibles everywhere )

                      Here’s ‘alternate Manhattan’ from Fringe:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Watching small children attending the opening of the new Steve McQueen exhibition at Tate Britain expressing their clearly sincere delight and wonderment on the lunchtime news made me aware of the likeliest source of such announcer hype.

                          - I enjoy that whole "steam punk"/"alternative present" idea. (And, after the forthcoming Ecological catastrophe - or, to be optimistic, to prevent such - possibly a vision of the future?)

Yes I enjoy it too (I toyed with using the phrase ‘steam punk’ in my previous post!).

In Man in the High Castle (which I’m only part-way through), much seems to hinge on whether the catastrophe of Hiroshima/Nagasaki can be prevented....

There was an amazon kindle offer of the trilogy, plus excerpts from another of Pullman's books for £3.99 yesterday. I thought it worth a try, though I've not got far enough into HDM to make a reliable judgement yet. So far the concept of person plus daemon does seem odd, but one explanation given very early on is that the daemons can change form - though not sure how and why. That might make a visual presentation difficult, unless other clues are given.

I saw the production of HDM at the NT years ago - I found it odd, and enthusiasts then seemed to think it wasn't as good as the book. So far I'm not sure that I'm liking the book too much, but I'll persist.

Sorry I didn't see the amazon offer until late last night, and the price has now reverted I think.

IMO, the HDM trilogy in book form is streets ahead of the NT show and even more so the BBC version.
