Oliver Soden's recent biography of Tippett has received universal praise on this Forum*:
For years I have admired Humphrey Carpenter's Britten:
Tilbury on Cardew is splendid (but at current prices, probably something to find from a public library, if you can find one):
... and, an "unconventional biography" that I've thoroughly enjoyed reading and consulting throughout this year:
(Plenty of studies of RVW's work aound, but I don't know of a recent biography of the composer.)
And a couple on Finzi:
* - including vinty's endorsement, posted as I was writing this!

Really an evaluation of Frank Bridge's music rather than a straight biography if that appeal's, but Anthony Payne's book is excellent

Many thanks to all who have contributed ideas. Many for me to investigate. Think I may start with the recent Tippet book - I seem to recall rather enjoying the CoTW on him earlier in the year.Last edited by cmr_for3; 19-10-19, 17:36.Comment
