Stan and Ollie. The Movie.

Looking forward to seeing this. Their shorts (including the silent ones) are masterpieces. They began to spread themselves too thinly already in their feature films (which reused a lot of gags from the shorts) but for me they were probably the greatest comics of the century.

I'm not much of a one for comedy but I've recently been re-watching some of the first I'm Alan Partridge series and I have no hesitation in saying he is a comic genius.

Finally saw Stan and Ollie at the cinema yesterday afternoon - cracking film, touching and quietly dazzling in terms of the performances of Coogan and Reilly (also the actresses playing the wives)...

Turns out that County Hospital plays a pivotal role in the film, so was glad to have enjoyed the real thing so recently.

Superlative as the two leading performances were, seeing the real Way Out West dance at the end alongside the credits reminded one that the sheer finesse of L&H themselves outstripped any impersonation (of course): e.g. the delicacy of Oliver Hardy's hand movements during the dance, mesmerising and hilarious (especially in contrast to his elephantine bulk).

Thanks for these recommendations - another die-hard fan here, from the age of 5 when the BBC broadcast the shorts on TV on Saturday mornings. I have seen them all dozens of times but never tire of them - indeed they seem to become funnier when you know what is coming next! Their regular supporting players such as the wonderful James Finlayson and Mae Busch add to the fun.
