BBC TV's Film Programme to close

I haven't watched it lately, but used to in the days when Barry Norman was presenter.

The BBC says 2018 will be the final year of the show, which has been hosted by Barry Norman, Jonathan Ross and Claudia Winkleman.

Sometimes, I'd just turn on for the theme music!

I think the concept one worked with Barry Norman in the chair. He was very good, occasionally very funny - but I always had the feeling the programme would have been even better had it not concentrated so much on 'mainstream' cinema.

Barry did some great interviews, as well, at least in the early days. I think he got a bit sycophantic later on.

I stopped watching it when Jonathan Ross took over (the phrase 'Hyperion to a satyr' had never seemed so apposite). Ross's awful interview with Harrison Ford had the strange effect of making me feel sorry for a multi-millionaire film star.

I don't think there is room for a serious film programme on mainstream television any more, alas.

I tuned out during the Jonathon Ross period as well. He'd been charged with reviewing a film of a Mozart opera, obviously under duress, and commented 'I'm told it's true to the libretto, whatever that is!'. At that point I realised that I was watching someone who was proud of his ignorance and felt sad that the standard set by Barry Norman had fallen to an all time low. And shortly after that came 'Sachsgate' with the dreadful nonentity whose name I can't even be bothered to use brain power recalling.

      Yuck!

try it you might like it etc.

Does anyone else here join me in always finding Mark Kermode insufferably full of his own importance?

Sorry SA, no - I'm a big fan & I think that is an unfair judgment...... (last night's BBC4 special on the Christmas Film genre was pretty good too....)....he has both arcane and extensive knowledge, a true love of cinema, plus an articulate & sardonic wit, to recommend him....very good-to-camera, clear delivery....

Were it not for the air of supercilious pomposity that he, in common with quite a few commentators on, in particular, BBC arts programmes, past and present exude, I might be inclined to take your word for it, jayne!

Yes, been on 'series record' for some time, jayne. I have no problem with the Kermode manner - and over time I've found him a pretty reliable guide, judging by the films I've been to see which he's rated highly.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Sorry, S_A, I don't agree with your "insufferably full of his own importance" or the "supercilious pomposity" at all.

I agree. I usually listen to his two-hour Friday afternoon review/interview show on Five Live with Simon Mayo. It's the only show I know that surveys both the top ten films currently on general release and reviews all the week's new films. It is a good listen - and also one of the BBC's more popular podcasts. I find his manner to be the opposite of those attributes mentioned above. He has a good sense of humour, not taking himself too seriously at all. He expresses his views strongly, which is what one might expect of any critic worth hearing, but very much respects the opinions of others.

I'm not at all surprised that Film 20xx has been killed off: not only has it been hidden away late at night with virtually no fanfare (it would usually be halfway through the run before I even realised it was on), but I think the death blow was probably struck when they decided to have 2 people sitting there talking to each other about the films. I mean, way to make even the most avid viewer tune out through boredom! Watching 2 people having a conversation can be very boring ...

Not really - at least he appears to be a very bright guy, knowledgable about films, which is more than can be said of any Film xx presenter since Barry Norman and I would have had him take over the programme years ago. Personally I rarely watch films as they take up too much time in my life which I want to spend on other more inresting activities.

Yes. On the other hand, I greatly enjoyed Matthew Sweet's contributions to Al Murray's BBC4 programme on British war films.

Surely the BBC hasn’t run out of ludicrously overpaid people to present it.
