Line of Duty was not just streets but whole cities better. It's - as said upthread - 'chamber drama' - Mercurio's top mode with tension between fine actors, terse scripts, focused issues.
Bodyguard is far, far too American market drive-by-shooting - in the televisual editing sense.

I have never been able to watch American television series, even the highly-lauded ones - Breaking Bad, Madmen, The Wire - because they're all too damn glossy and 'accomplished'. I would not place Bodyguard among their number: unlike the series I've mentioned, I do actually want to watch the next episode. I gave up one the others after one episode (two in the case of BB).

- but why? Why not (as RT asked earlier) just bug the room? That way everything could be heard and recorded, and no chance of the Bug missing something because it had nipped off for a shower? Plotwise, it's essential - so that Budd's bosses don't know about his extra-curricular activities with Montague - but that can't have been Craddock's reason.

The Wire was anything but "glossy" and as for - True Detective, The Night Of, The Deuce, Sharp Objects.....it would help to watch a few episodes before passing judgment. They usually surpass BBC/ITV drama for - writing, directing, emotional and psychological subtlety, sheer daringness & unpredictability of pace and plot....

The Deuce - oh so unpromisingly set in the 1970s New York porn industry, but actual a study of character, friendship, relationships, life histories on and off the street..(Mafia brutality is NOT glossed over..).. is back on Sky Atlantic 11/09... with the screen-magnetising Maggie Gyllenhall and James Franco.

(in Sharp Objects, the big reveal was left until - the END CREDITS After the final episode! And yes, I did miss it the first time! Thank god for those incredibly impressive online reviewers)

Seriously, this series is not about memorable or insightful dialogue: it's about innutritious thrills. It doesn't pretend to be about anything else!
