The R4 series ‘The Poet Laureate has gone to his shed’
came to a close last night. It replaced Saturday Review because there was nothing new to review. Such a simple concept - two people in intelligent conversation about poetry and much else, but brilliantly executed by Simon Armitage who has such charm. The episode with naturalist/broadcaster Chris Packham was unexpectedly moving. Last night’s episode was a 45 minute monologue, yet was enthralling.
It strikes me the R3 has not had a good lockdown - sticking rigidly to its dull magazine dominated schedules, with no innovative programme making or flexibility that reflect upon the changed times.

I've abandoned The Andrew Marr Show in favour of 'BH' on Radio 4, hosted by the genial Paddy O'Connell. Today's edition has included a BRILLIANT remote mash-up by the BBC Philharmonic of radio show themes, complete with whistles and applause contributed by listeners*, an interview with Ian Hislop on turning 60, and an 85-year-old paper reviewer in the shape of Richard Wilson. I mustn't forget the high-volume purring of the 16-year-old cat. Plenty of more serious stuff, including Theresa Villiers on the parlous situation of the 3 million or so people who've been 'excluded' from the various government initiatives.
* The BBC Philharmonic's slot runs from 0935 to 0940.

Worth hearing this a.m.'s 'Broadcasting House' on R4 for the fantastic pot-pourri of listener tunes the BBC Phil arranged and recorded via lockdown technology.
'The Archers' please note - if a bloomin' whole SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CAN RECORD, then why, pray, cannot The Archers, and thus escape the misery of meaningless daftness it has descended to??????

The only non-radio theme is 'The Great Escape', which was of course the idea underpinning the whole thing.
