Talking of Netflix, has anyone been watching Unorthodox? It is an incredibly touching story of a young orthodox Jewish bride who 'escapes' from an ultra-orthodox community in New York and flies to Berlin. A music academy setting is involved, but I won't say more...and I've only got up to two out of four episodes. So far, it's the best thing I've seen on TV for a long time.

Yes, offspring at home for the lockdown, and brought the Netflix subscription with her. Did you watch the "Making of" as well - 20 minute item; the series mainly filmed in Berlin?
I/we did enjoy it - very much, it was a fascinating programme. The end of it, ... (edited out as perhaps giving too much away; invited Ardcarp - post below - to do the same....)

There was a bit of discomfort for this aged viewer, I have to say, with the early episodes of the adaptation of Sally Rooney's 'Normal People', showing on BBC1, but available on the i-player. But the performances of the two leads, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, as the two Sligo teenagers are quite excellent. Very enjoyable series so far - we're halfway through and trying not to rush through, which is the temptation.

(The Ardcarps have been guessing how it might all turn out...ranging from the happy ending to the heroine's return to the orthodox fold.)Last edited by ardcarp; 01-05-20, 13:27.

Seen all through now. Incredible production skill in all departments...as the 'Making' shows. So often when musical performance is involved, any sort of fudging can be spotted a mile off...but not here*. No 'suspension of disbelief' required anywhere in this brilliant and moving film.
*The only thing that didn't quite ring true (episode 2 ?) was a conductor being stopped by the academy's director who then told the orchestra what it was doing wrong. Not quite believable, but I think it was done because the conductor was a real one and not an actor. Better to have it that way round than a 'fake' conductor waving a stick irrationally!

Last ever, ever episode of the consistently gripping Homeland tonight.... 2 hours long, homing in on the threat of nuclear war and.....racking up the tension between Saul and Carrie.....it had to be them in the finale didn't it? I'll miss Carrie a lot - one of the first truly strong women in TV drama I could identify with...
Speaking of which .....Killing Eve has lost its novelty value, feels a bit formulaic in S3, but remains very watchable especially when Villanelle or Carolyn are onscreen...(and still sometimes a bit look away now....
Bingeing through Normal People on BBC3 last night, about halfway through (12 x 30' episodes via iplayer etc)...... I usually avoid domestic/realistic dramas, especially hetero love stories, even more especially teen/young adult school/college love stories, but..... this one is utterly wonderful - so subtly written, directed and above all acted by the two leads its a very involving and nuanced tale of their on-off intense affair, unusually insightful emotionally.......very highly recommended!
The Mandalorian (Disney+) had a truly compelling, spectacular finale - our new cult droid hero IG-11 sweeps in on a speederbike to save his friends! Plenty left for S2 to develop (10/2020 - too long to wait!)....I love the grit and grime of this series, its humour, imagination & intimacy, very different from the latter-day space battle epics of Star Wars...
And it has a very cool theme tune....

Pretty good huh?
After 0'45, it seems just about to turn into......which classical masterpiece d'you think? Wait for the brass to come in....

... those who enjoy Spiral (Engrenages) might also enjoy The Other Mother (Maman a Tort), streaming on All 4. A similar dynamic between police commandante and her unruly team. Intriguing local colour, le Havre and surroundings...
Adapted from a best selling detective novel by Michel Bussi, Maman a tort, (Mummy is wrong) a TV mini-fiction in six episodes broadcast on France 2, has everything going for it: great casting, stunning decors and mostly, a story that captivates you right from the first images. Bingo! Finally a great Frenchy series for all those hooked on spine-chilling thrillers.
