BBC4 Weds 23 May: Big Sky, Big Dreams, Big Art: Made in the USA

9pm - New series. 1/3 From Wild West to Abstract Expressionism
Waldemar Januszczak begins his exploration of the history of American art in the Wild West, with the sublime art of the Hudson River School, whose 19th-century evocations of the vastness of the country fuelled the myth of the Promised Land. The episode culminates in a celebration of Wyoming-born Jackson Pollock, whose drip paintings were influenced by both the moods of the American West and the example of native American artists.

No doubt Januszczak's rough-and-ready heft of presentation will prove a suitable match for his subject. I've marked it up for viewing.

A repeat of David Olusoga's excellent BBC2 4-parter Black and British: A Forgotten History, follows at 10pm, and following that, his equally fine Fighting for King and Empire: Britain's Caribbean Heroes. Note correct pronunciation of "Caribbean".
