    Moderate Soprano

The play The Moderate Soprano by David Hare which is on at the Duke of York's theatre is quite good and entertaining. I'm not sure how truthful/accurate it is. The one major flaw is at the end, where some so and so has let the sound people put out the opening of the Marriage of Figaro at far too high a level, and it sounds shrill and deafening. Really those theatre people ought to be taken out and .... I'll leave my sentence unfinished. Doesn't anyone ever complain and have an effect on those responsible?

I have an idea what the opening should sound like, having heard it at fairly close quarters a few weeks ago at ENO. I don't want it pianissimo, but not fffff either. It would be interesting to know if the recording used was actually one by Fritz Busch. It might have been.

    Otherwise it's really rather good.
