I thought the horn player was spectacularly good - but what do I know? I'm not a brass player. I agree about Isabelle Daws being very good though.

Very high standard in this round. I thought the first trombonist (She won in fact) and the bass trombonist were both excellent - lovely sounds and very musical.

Yes, the winner came over as a very 'complete' musician. But indeed the standard of all was excellent. Judging by the state of their lips, it looked as if some had been practising too much, if that's possible. Wasn't the 15-year-old horn player amazingly mature and assured? I think they'll all go far.

No thoughts on the pianists ? I thought it was a high quality round and was struck by what appeared to be a genuine love and enthusiasm for the music from the performers.

Yes, pleased to see the Jury agreed with me!

We picked out the winner as the most outstanding, heads and shoulders above the others. She's been an up and coming prodigy since age 12 or so and my wife has been following her career since she played in a Beethoven competition 3 years ago at the time one of her pupils also played.

I was wrong about the result in this category final! Ah well.

Yes she stood out, although I was pretty hooked by the dexterity of the rather austere but phenomenal Anglo-Korean lad.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
