Episode 2 of the repeat of this two-part series has just been shown on BBC4. Michael Scott is the excellent presenter. The programmes are stunningly filmed, and far from the touristy kind of show one was half-expecting, this deals in in-depth detail with history, geology, culture and architecture, with the personable Scott fully conversant in Italian. Highlights of the second programme have included frank discussion with locals, including Palermo's fine mayor, on the mafia and recent immigration. I can't recommend too strongly. Five stars.

A case for a TV licence, I feel
I travelled round/through Sicily by train. Wonderful, especially the Valley of the Temples, near Agrigento.
In a hardware shop in Palermo, they has two little pottery figures, like toby jugs, in the window: mafioso and mafiosa
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world. -

Very much Agree - Agrigento was wonderful. Taormina was like an upmarket but very busy resort (locals told us because Dire Straits were playing the theatre that night). Anyone hiring a car should ensure it or they have a Satnav - outskirts of Palermo to find the spectacular Monreal Cathedral was a severe test of nerve.Comment

Must make time to watch this. I love Syracuse and at one point dreamed of retiring there...took my son as a boy when the Archimedes story gave his interest in Maths a heroic focus. It takes a real hero to go on drawing figures in the sand when confronted by murderous idiots in uniform.Comment
