Melvyn's topic today was the Siege of Malta by the Ottoman Empire. I was keen to listen to this as I have visited Malta, and have been amazed at its opulent churches, its history, its fortifications and the Grand Harbour at Valletta. I was slightly puzzled by the slant of the programme which focused almost entirely on the Ottoman side of the siege, much less emphasis being given to the successful defence put up by the Knights of the Order of St John. I was puzzled too by the persistent avoidance of the 'St John' title, and constant reference to Knights Hospitallers. Was there some political or historical correctness at play here? I felt, as often happens, Melvyn became obsessed with certain details rather than letting the studio guests unfold the full story.
