          Alas, being first rate is no guarantee of recommissioning by Auntie - see Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle, which was dark, challenging, avant-garde and surely 'first rate', taking stand-up on TV to new and uncomfortable areas, but was dropped after four series (all now grist to Lee's comedic mill).
