    Inside No. 9 - BBC2

This series has been variable during its first three seasons.

However imho the first two of the new season have been, in different ways, exceptionally good and I think the best thing on telly since Detectorists.

The first one was a brilliant Scherzo on Shakespearian Themes, all in iambic pentameter:

Dark comedies by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. Proposals, plots and prostitutes combine for a comedy of errors on floor nine. Welcome to London's Hotel Zanzibar.

This week's was if anything even finer, poignant and very funny:

Dark comedy. Len and Tommy last performed together 30 years ago. Tommy walked out and that was that for the double act - until now.

    Please don't miss.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I've greatly enjoyed all episodes of these series, but I agree - the standards of writing and performance in the two episodes of this new series are at a much higher level.

Had you not posted this fillip, I might indeed have missed this. Two for the iPlayer. Many thanks.

I've just discovered this on the iPlayer and have been watching three or episodes a day in order to complete series 1 to 3 by Monday! I also accidentally found myself watching the 'Crackers and Cheese' episode from series 4, which I thought was absolutely brilliant - very funny but also, like all the best comedy - very moving. The writing and the acting are consistently exemplary.

I agree with Caliban that the quality has been variable over the three-plus series, but the episodes have never been less than good and often much more than that. 'The 12 days of Christine' (with Sheridan Smith) in series 2, for example, was brilliant - by turns amusing, creepy and moving. Yesterday's 'Bernie Clifton's dressing room' was nearly as good.

At their best, they pack more ideas, interest and sheer quality into 30 minutes than most full length films. One of the very few must-sees on TV currently for me.

'To Have And To Hold' - another excellent episode, featuring the wonderful Nicola Walker.

                          She is, isn't she!

And it was ... though I thought the last couple of episodes have merely been "excellent" compared with the extraordinary superlatives of the first two.
