Extraordinary Teens: Young, Gifted and Broke - Ch4 Tues 19 Dec 10 pm

I watched this last night with a growing sense of unease and disheartenment, notwithstanding the fact that the programme ended with something of a glimmer of hope, so long as young Shane can avoid the emotional family pressures so painfully evidenced as to be immediately echoed in my own adolescent experiences, and continue to grow on his own strengths. The situation portrayed was straight out of RD Laing's early 1970s book "Sanity, Madness and the Family" - beyond that it is hard to comment beyond hoping for the positive outcomes those at Decca were so sympathetically encouraging, without fearing one may just be adding to his problems - social media not having been around at the time Laing was writing.

The programme can be played by clicking on the topmost of the links displayed on the page below, with a warning that this is difficult to watch:

Yes - I did watch this programme and thought every aspect of it was extraordinary. A heightened emotional intelligence and extreme ability, each to a large extent prompted by early family complications, and there are few which have been more complicated, having to find their way in this world of systems where the main figures are essentially cardboard cut outs.

The most moving and thought provoking documentary in a long time.
