I think you're all a bit gullible. It's just a bit of fluffy entertainment and the rules are a) keep the scores fairly even b) let the viewer/listener feel a smart arse from time to time.

But, yes, I would be surprised
BUT it simply illustrates that "Classical Music" no longer enjoys the special cultural status it used to.
I'm often "shocked" (but not really) that people who claim to be "music lovers" have no knowledge of music outside the narrow genres they listen to.

I frequently get "cross" (bit not really) when people talk about the "Theremin" on Good Vibrations BUT that's just my own niche pedantry

We could argue long into the night on this. I don't acccept that 'music is just music'. That's simplistic (if it was, why didn't Will Gompertz know that Verdi composed La Traviata?). If it was, people would listen to classical music just as often as pop. I often sample videos that are posted here, or youtube clips of people whose names are mentioned. I've never yet come across anything that got me hooked, or gave me any enjoyment.

On the other hand, I would NEVER describe myself as a 'music lover'. Music covers a huge range of styles and - I think - we all concentrate on the small areas where we find most enjoyment. This is known as personal taste. And you have it too!

Why would I - a venerable old age pensioner - want to follow the latest in pop music? So where am I allowed to draw the line? As long as I include Metallica, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Queen and all the pop "greats" in my listening, may I leave out Justin Bieber and Adele?

And as long as I don't try to claim that classical music is somehow 'better' than all these other styles, or that what I don't like is 'rubbish', why should it matter what I listen to?

Really ? The classical music infrastructure, which is out of all proportion to the commercial appeal of the music ( compared to other genres) is still there.
Conductors get Knighthoods, and big salaries funded to a great extent by the taxpayer.Orchestras, lots of them, get a very substantial part of their income from Arts Council funding. We produce large numbers of professional level players for whom there is no obvious professional performance opportunity. Music college remains a " prestige" destination. The BBC funds a number of professional classical performance groups, with not much comparable spend in other music, AFAIK. And so on.

Things have changed, but I wouldn't say they have changed that much.
