I recall him giving a reading in Waterstones, Deansgate, Manchester one sunday afternoon. It was in what is now the fiction department on the first floor (for those who know the shop) and the audience was held spellbouind. I cannot remember the date but think it was sometime in the 1980s, before WH Smioth bought Waterstones and changed it for the worse.

I didn't realize that he had emigrated to America. I heard him at reading in the 1970s and his stuff was very Anti American. I remember thinking that he must have been vmade to cow tow to the Party Line, but when I heard him may have actually been after he emigrated.Comment
