The death of former Beano cartoonist, Leo Baxendale, this week reminded me that his creation Minnie the Minx is celebrated in Dundee.

...and talking obituaries, sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz died last week. I've never seen the headless Agora sculptures in Chicago but I thought the images looked wonderful.

      Giacometti, Paris, 1951

Looking forward to Giacometti show coming up at Tate Modern. Fascinating artist and an interesting programme is currently showing on Sky Arts. The Stanley Tucci movie, Final Portrait, will be seen here later this year.

Billy Connolly may well be the greatest living Scot - he's certainly the funniest man I've ever seen. Billy has turned 75 and although now suffering with Parkinson's he turned out for this, a BBC1 programme made along with Glasgow City Council to create three portraits of him by Rachel McLean, Jack Vettriano and Billy's long time friend, John Byrne. The portraits have been transferred to gable ends in Glasgow. Last night on Beeb 1 Scotland they screened the really celebratory programme about the making of the portraits of the great man...Connolly is a bit of a shadow of his former self and yet he retains such dignity and integrity which I think is why he is loved by his fellow countryfolks. Here's a link to the programme.
Three Scottish artists paint Billy Connolly in celebration of his 75th birthday.

I'll let those who feel like watching have a look at the murals in the programme - otherwise they're not hard to find.
