    Pedalling Dreams: The Raleigh Story

I thought this documentary about the Raleigh Company of Nottingham shown on BBC 4 this evening was a great watch. Full of great stories, fantastic old film footage and some memories too; it also had one of the craziest hairstyles I have ever seen on TV.

John, I have to confess that I never owned a proper bike. Nevertheless I enjoyed the programme - mostly the personal memories of the people featured. My own memory is of one of the posters for Raleigh bikes, and I was amazed to see it at least three times during the programme. It was the one with the lad being chased by an angry lion ( the best example about half way through the film). I used to see this one on the gable of a bicycle shop, in full colour on enamelled tin and taking up the whole width of the wall. That must have been in the 1940s and the image has surfaced in my memory from time to time, but not actually seen again until now. These things occasionally happen.
I presume the hairstyle is that of C---s Ho----n, with what looks like a luxuriant handlebar moustache on his forehead. A Raleigh man par excellence he was, with a nice factory line in Rock'n Roll.
