Bowie: the last Five Years - Saturday 7 January BBC 2

    9.00 pm

DOCUMENTARY David Bowie's death one year ago at the age of 69 was a shocker. He had been part of the cultural fabric for five decades, but this time the pop phoenix wasn't coming back. Francis Whateley, who directed the superb Five Years film zoning in on the landmark years (Friday 11 pm BBC 4) here focuses on the last chapters in Bowie's life. And that sounds maudlin but the fact is that this was another astonishingly creative period for the erstwhile Major Tom and Thin White Duke. Whateley finds a man returning to the very core of his previous works. MARK BRAXTON

So says Radio Times - I shall be watching, not so much because I enjoyed Bowie's work but in part in view of his status as a cultural icon, and in part because at the end of his life Bowie began to interest himself in what jazz musicians had to offer him, apparently, after a gap of more than 60 years.

I watched it and found it incredibly moving - I've been a fan on and off since the mid 70s.

He looked so happy on stage in the footage from the 2003, not something I was expecting. As I think someone said, he was able to finally be David Bowie rather than another persona.

The final album was a cracker imho. As strong as anything he done earlier.

Haven't seen it yet but looking forward to catching up. Mrs C is more of a fan, but I do enjoy a bit of Bowie now and again. It being the 70th anniversary of his birth today, and with this week marking the first anniversary of his death, 6 Music are having a Bowie Love-in this week. I only mention it because they broadcast an excellent personal documentary by long time Bowie fan, Adam Buxton today. Full of interview clips, humour and some funny voices this was a fun hour if you like a bit of Bowie... and a bit of Adam (without Joe). Part 2 is also available. Here's part one:
Adam Buxton take us on a journey through the weird and wonderful world of David Bowie.

Yes I found it very moving. I thought it used his last work as a good peg to hang quite a lot of relatively unknown earlier stuff on, which made for a more varied film than if they'd concentrated just on the last five years, plus there's a limited amount of info so far about what he was up to. You can never please everyone of course. Every Bowie fan has their own version of him......
